.law and .abogado are new restricted top-level domains (TLDs) that aim to promote trust in the professional legal community by creating exclusive online spaces in which only qualifying lawyers and legal institutions that are regulated and licensed to practice law can present themselves in a distinctive and memorable manner.
What makes .law and .abogado unique?
.law and .abogado will offer domain names only to Qualified Lawyers and Authorized Legal Institutions who satisfy the eligibility criteria. Who is a Qualified Lawyer?
A Qualified Lawyer is a lawyer who has been verified by our verification agent as a licensed legal professional in an appropriately-regulated jurisdiction. Please see our Eligibility Policy for additional information.
What is an Authorized Legal Institution?
An Authorized Legal Institution is a Law Firm, Law School and Legal Regulators such as Courts of Law and Bar Associations which has been verified by our verification agent.
Who is .law?
Minds + Machines Group Limited (LSE:MMX), a leading owner and operator of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), has been given the exclusive license to be the registry operator for .law and .abogado by ICANN, the regulator of the Internet namespace.

No, .law and .abogado domain names are open to Qualified Lawyers and Authorized Legal Institutions anywhere in the world. Please note that what constitutes an appropriately-regulated and licensed legal professional or legal institution may vary among jurisdictions.
Can any entity acquire a .law or .abogado domain name?
Yes. The applicant must be a Qualified Lawyer or Authorized Institution as defined by the Eligibility Policy. The Qualified Lawyer or Authorized Institution may apply for any domain name, including on behalf of a client, firm, company, or their employer.
May I use a Privacy or Proxy Service to apply for a domain name?
No. Applications for domain names in .law and .abogado using a registrar proxy or privacy service or any other service having an equivalent effect will not be allowed. What is the verification process?
MMX has engaged an independent verification company to verify registrants for .law and .abogado domain names based upon the criteria in the Eligibility Policy, and includes the right to request for any additional information or documentation it deems necessary to complete the verification process.
What information is used to verify a registrant's eligibility?
The Verification Agent will use the WHOIS record to attempt to verify a registrant’s eligibility through the regulatory bodies. If the verification agent is unable to verify a registrant’s eligibility based solely on the WHOIS data, they may request additional supporting evidence deemed necessary to complete the verification process.
How long will the verification process typically take?
Timing will depend on the quality of the information submitted and the availability of data from regulatory bodies. We expect that the majority of verifications will be completed within 24 to 48 hours of being submitted.
How often will registrants be verified? What is the process and what is the registrars’ responsibility?
Registrants will be verified after registering a domain, renewal of their domain name, and where there are updates to their whois data. Registrants may also be re-verified on a random basis during their registration term at the discretion of the registry.
Is there a verification appeals process?
Yes, there will be a verification appeals process. The third party verification agent will provide such details directly to the registrant in question.
How do I register a .law or .abogado domain?
For a list of authorized registrars, please see the nic.law Registrars page. Registrations are on a first come, first served basis for any .law or .abogado domain name. Upon order completion the requested domain name(s) are provisionally allocated to you at that time. The registry, through its third party verification agent, will then verify the information based upon the criteria in the Eligibility Policy. This may still result in additional information or documentation being requested before the verification process can be completed. Verification typically takes one to two working days.
What names may I register?
A Qualified Lawyer or an Authorized Legal Institution may register for any available domain name in .law or .abogado.
Does the domain name have to relate to the registrant’s personal name, business name, trademark, or service mark?
No. A Qualified Lawyer or Authorized Legal Institution may register for any available domain name in .law or .abogado.

.law and .abogado use a tiered pricing structure with one standard price and multiple premium pricing tiers. Please check with an authorized registrar for pricing.

There is no maximum number.

No. The registrant must be a Qualified Lawyer or Authorized Legal Institution as defined in this Q&A and must provide their full name and organization name for verification purposes. Failure to provide this information may result in a failed verification and the deletion of the domain registration. Other contact details (technical, administrative, etc.) may be different.
